A REST endpoint does not tell you what happens after the calculation. Some providers return an amount. Others also save transactions or add reporting, registration, and filing. Compare the API contract and the services attached to it separately.
Nine products, different API jobs
The table is a shortlist, not a ranking. “API” can mean a calculation endpoint, a way to save completed transactions, or a connection to a larger tax service.
| Provider | How the API is sold | Look closer when |
|---|---|---|
| A calculation API with coverage checks, transactions, adjustments, and batches. Public plans show monthly API-call allowances and limits. | Your application manages tax operations. The dashboard covers API keys, request logs, usage, and billing. | |
| A sales tax API with transaction reports and optional AutoFile services. | You use its reporting, order imports, integrations, or filing as well as the calculation endpoint. | |
| Calculation and transaction APIs, with Tax Basic and Tax Complete service plans. | You want calculation tied to Stripe’s tax products. Its API pricing also covers transactions from other payment processors. | |
| A REST calculation API connected to Avalara’s wider tax engine and compliance products. | You need AvaTax transaction workflows, tax configuration, or business-system integrations. | |
| A tax engine API with SDKs and docs. API access is listed under Enterprise pricing. | You want API calculations alongside managed registration and filing services. | |
| API access is included in Premium, alongside other sales tax services. | You want one provider for the API and services such as reporting or filing. | |
| A developer API for calculations and transactions, with nexus tracking and filing services. | You want an API connected to sales tax operations. Confirm geographic coverage and quote details. | |
| An API for tax estimates and saved transactions within a broader sales tax compliance service. | Your tax workflow fits Anrok’s SaaS focus and you want its related compliance services. | |
| An API for tax calculations and transactions, with invoices, reports, and obligation alerts. | You need those additional records and services. Its plans count transactions and API calls. |

An API label does not tell you whether reports, registrations, or returns are included. Check each provider’s current plan details.
Check what goes into the calculation
The request shape tells you how much of your own tax model you must send on every call. Compare seller details, customer location, product codes, transaction dates, and line items. Then check how the API handles missing or conflicting facts.
For example, Sales Tax Calculator API asks for seller and customer facts, product tax codes, amounts, currency, tax behavior, and the transaction type. TaxJar’s order-calculation API takes origin and destination details plus order or line-item data. AvaTax creates transactions against the company configuration attached to its account. Those are different integration contracts, so map your own fields before estimating development work.
- Can your system send every required seller, customer, product, currency, and date field?
- Does the response explain the result, including cases that need review or are unsupported?
- Does a calculation call save a transaction, or is that a separate request?
- Can you retrieve, correct, or reverse the records your team needs to keep?
- How are retries, duplicate requests, and partial failures handled?
The same workload can lead to a different bill
A public API call, a saved transaction, and an order are different counts. Our plans bill for each authenticated API call to a public endpoint. Other providers may bill by orders or saved transactions. Add those costs and any filing or support fees to the estimate.
| Provider | Published pricing unit | What to add to the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticated API calls to public endpoints. Developer is $5 per 1,000 API calls. Launch is $29 for 15,000 API calls. | Included API calls, price per extra call, monthly limit, and bill cap. Scale starts at $99 for 75,000 API calls. | |
| Monthly order tiers. Each API calculation or rate lookup counts as one tenth of an order. | Imported orders, AutoFile returns, registrations, and the plan price for your account. The listed $499 Professional 1K tier is subject to the announced October 1 price change. | |
| $0.05 per Calculation API call. A Transaction API call costs $0.50 and includes up to ten calculation calls. | Count both API types. Extra calculations above the included ten cost $0.05 each. | |
| Package and usage terms depend on the sales quote. | Ask which API, transaction allowance, integrations, and services the quote includes. We could not verify an API-only public price. | |
| Custom Enterprise pricing for the Tax Engine API. | Get the API price separate from the published filing and registration fees. | |
| API access is part of Premium. Plans use order volume and a selected filing plan. | Check the plan tier, filing fees, and any state surcharges. |

These are different billing models, not a single apples-to-apples price list. The pricing article works through the public examples.
Check what the dashboard actually does
Some dashboards manage the full tax process. Others help developers manage API access and inspect requests. Sales Tax Calculator API’s dashboard is for keys, logs, usage, billing, and account settings. It does not prepare returns, register sellers, or monitor tax obligations.
If your team relies on provider reports or filing tools, include the time and cost of replacing them. If another system already owns those jobs, compare the calculation API and its request records on their own.
Run the same cases before you choose
A coverage page cannot tell you how an API will handle every input your application sends. Use equivalent dated requests and compare the result, the saved record, and the error path.
- Include your common product codes and the locations you send most often.
- Add one refund or correction and one request with a required fact missing.
- Record the response, status, request ID, and any provider-side record created.
- Price the same month of calls, orders, transactions, and filing work for each provider.
