Stripe Tax is not limited to transactions processed by Stripe. The API pricing page also describes tax transactions from other payment processors. If you are comparing alternatives, first decide whether the issue is the calculation API, its billing model, or the tax services around it.
Compare the API and the tax service separately
Stripe Tax offers a Calculation API and a Transaction API. Its Tax Basic and Tax Complete plans add service scope around those APIs. Alternatives also range from calculation-only products to tax services that include transaction records, reporting, registration, or filing.
| Provider | What it offers | Pricing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Calculations, coverage checks, transaction records, adjustments, and batches. It does not provide registration or filing. | Monthly API-call allowances and overage rates. | |
| Calculations, transaction records, US reporting, and optional AutoFile. | Monthly order tiers. Each API calculation or rate lookup is 0.1 order. | |
| REST calculation API connected to a wider tax engine and compliance products. | Package and usage terms in a sales quote. | |
| Sales tax API access included with its Premium plan and related services. | Order volume and selected filing plan. | |
| Tax Engine API with managed tax services. API access is listed under Enterprise. | Custom Enterprise API pricing. | |
| Developer API for calculations and transactions, plus nexus tracking and filing services. | Confirm the full quote and geographic coverage. | |
| Tax estimate and transaction APIs within a broader compliance service. | Confirm service scope and contract pricing. | |
| Calculation and transaction APIs with invoicing, reports, and obligation alerts. | Monthly limits for both transactions and API calls. |

These products do not all include the same tax services. Compare the work your team will use, not just the API label.
You can use Stripe Tax without Stripe Payments
Stripe’s pricing page says its Tax Transaction API can be used for transactions created through Stripe’s payment APIs or any payment processor. If you were considering a switch only because you use another processor, test the Stripe Tax API before adding a migration. Check the API and plan terms for your account, including which records and services you need.
If Stripe Tax is not the right fit
These alternatives change more than the endpoint. Compare why you would move and what would need a new home afterward.

The Stripe endpoint changes the estimate
Stripe lists two pay-as-you-go API prices. A Calculation API call is $0.05. A Transaction API call is $0.50 and includes up to ten calculation calls. Extra calculation calls cost $0.05 each.
| Monthly pattern | Calculation API | Transaction API |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 tax calculations, no saved transaction through this API | $500 for 10,000 calls. | Not the same request pattern. |
| 1,000 saved transactions with up to 10 calculations each | Up to $500 for 10,000 Calculation API calls. | $500 for 1,000 Transaction API calls, each including up to 10 calculations. |
| 10,000 saved transactions with one calculation each | Up to $500 for 10,000 Calculation API calls. | $5,000 for 10,000 Transaction API calls, each including up to 10 calculations. |

Decide who owns reporting and filing
The right option depends on the tax work your team wants the provider to take on. Put the API price and the remaining work in the same estimate.

Run the same test before moving traffic
A headline price will not tell you whether another API handles your data in the same way. Use a shared set of dated transactions, then compare both the amount and the work around it.
- Send the same locations, line items, product codes, currency, and transaction dates.
- Test refunds, corrections, and incomplete customer information.
- Compare the result, response status, saved transaction, and retry behavior.
- Estimate the bill using each provider’s API-call, order, and saved-transaction charges.
- List the reports, registrations, and returns your team would still need after the switch.
