TaxJar can calculate tax, keep transaction records, provide reports, and offer AutoFile. Those jobs do not all have to move together. Start with the part you want to change, then compare providers that cover that same work.
Eight alternatives, with different jobs
This list includes focused calculation APIs and providers that pair an API with reporting, filing, or tax compliance services. “Alternative” does not mean each product replaces all of TaxJar. Use the last column to decide what to verify in a trial or sales quote.
| Provider | Why teams consider it | Check before you switch |
|---|---|---|
| Calculation, coverage checks, transaction records, adjustments, and batches. Public plans bill by authenticated API call. | It does not provide registration or return filing. Test your locations, product codes, outcomes, and record needs. | |
| Calculation and transaction APIs, with separate Tax Basic and Tax Complete services. The API can work with other payment processors. | Model Calculation API calls and Transaction API calls separately. Check which plan includes the services you need. | |
| A REST calculation API connected to Avalara’s wider tax engine and compliance products. | Ask which transaction, return, integration, and support features are in your quote. | |
| A US sales tax API included in its Premium plan, alongside other tax services. | Confirm the order tier, filing plan, and total cost for your volume. | |
| A Tax Engine API paired with managed tax services. API access is listed under Enterprise pricing. | Get the API price and the countries and transaction types it supports in writing. | |
| A developer API for calculations and saved transactions, with nexus tracking and filing services. | Confirm geographic coverage, service scope, implementation needs, and the full quote. | |
| An API for tax estimates and saved transactions, built into a broader sales tax compliance service. | Check that its SaaS-focused workflow, coverage, and filing services match your use case. | |
| An API for tax calculations and transactions, with invoicing, reports, and obligation alerts. | Its plans count transactions and API calls. Check account defaults, registered jurisdictions, and both allowances. |

How each option fits
The summary table makes the differences easy to scan. These details help you decide which providers deserve a closer integration review.
Good fit
Your application needs calculations, coverage checks, transaction records, adjustments, or batches with a published monthly API-call allowance.
Check first
Registration, reporting, and filing stay with your other systems or tax team. Verify the locations and transaction types you send.
Good fit
You want separate calculation and transaction APIs with public pay-as-you-go rates. Transactions can use other payment processors too.
Check first
Calculate both endpoint patterns. A transaction call costs more than a calculation call and includes up to ten calculations.
Good fit
Your business already uses Avalara or needs its broader tax engine and connected business-system integrations.
Check first
Ask for the API, annual transaction allowance, configuration work, and related services as separate quote items.
Good fit
You want a US sales tax API with reporting or filing services from the same provider.
Check first
API access is part of Premium. Price the order tier and filing plan together.
Good fit
You want an API alongside managed registration and filing services.
Check first
API access is listed under Enterprise pricing. Ask for the supported jurisdictions and API price in writing.
Good fit
You want calculations and saved transactions connected to nexus tracking and filing work.
Check first
Confirm coverage for your locations and what the quote includes beyond API access.
Good fit
Your sales tax needs align with Anrok’s SaaS-focused API and broader compliance service.
Check first
Review how estimates become saved transactions and whether its coverage and service model match your data.
Find the reason for the search
The right shortlist depends on what is not working today. Separate the calculation endpoint from any records, reports, or services your team also uses.
- The bill is hard to forecast: convert your actual API calls and orders into each provider’s billable unit. TaxJar counts each calculation or rate lookup as one tenth of an order toward its monthly tier.
- You only call the calculation endpoint: compare calculation prices, response behavior, and location support. Keep filing or registration with the service you already use.
- You need returns or registrations as well: compare the full service and its fees. A calculation endpoint alone does not replace those jobs.
- You are changing your tax model or locations: test the same dated records with each provider before moving traffic.
When a focused API is enough
A focused API is worth comparing when your application owns the customer and transaction records and another team or system handles filing. Sales Tax Calculator API, for example, returns a calculation outcome and supports separate transaction, adjustment, batch, and coverage operations. It does not register sellers or file tax returns.
Stripe Tax also exposes a calculation API. Stripe lists $0.05 per Calculation API call and $0.50 per Transaction API call, which includes up to ten calculation calls. Its pricing page says transactions can come from Stripe or another payment processor. Count your actual calls before comparing those rates with a monthly order tier.
| If the current problem is… | Compare… | Measure… |
|---|---|---|
| Unclear calculation cost | Per-call, per-transaction, and order-tier pricing. | Three months of real usage converted into each provider’s unit. |
| Missing records or corrections | Transaction creation, updates, voids, refunds, and adjustments. | How much can be replayed and reconciled from your own data. |
| More tax work than calculation | Registration, reporting, returns, support, and integrations. | The full annual price and the work your team would still own. |
| Different location or product coverage | Coverage tools, required inputs, and supported tax codes. | The same dated cases, including the ones that need review. |

When TaxJar’s wider service matters
TaxJar remains a reasonable choice when the same account handles calculations, transaction reporting, or AutoFile for your team. Replacing it with a calculation-only API means assigning those other jobs somewhere else. TaxJar also has a broader API reference and client libraries, which may reduce migration work if your current integration already uses them.
TaxJar’s support page lists a $499 monthly Professional tier at 1,000 orders as of September 25, 2026. Its pricing notice says new pricing takes effect October 1, 2026. Check the current page and your account terms before putting that figure in a budget.
Use the same records to make the call
A migration estimate based on a handful of ordinary transactions misses the work that usually causes trouble. Build a test set from recent activity and include a few records that require careful handling.
- Use the same transaction date, seller location, customer facts, tax code, currency, and line amounts in each system.
- Include a refund, a correction, a multi-line transaction, and an incomplete or conflicting address.
- Compare the amount, status or outcome, error response, and provider-side record created.
- Replay a duplicate request and check how retries are handled.
- Calculate one month of cost from actual call and order counts, then add filing and reporting fees separately.
- Confirm which records, reports, and audit details your finance team needs to retain.

We checked public API documentation, product descriptions, and pricing pages on September 25, 2026. This is a feature and pricing comparison, not a benchmark. We did not send the same transactions through every provider. TaxJar has announced a price change effective October 1, 2026, so its listed tiers may change shortly after this update.
